More than Legal.

More than Government Affairs.

More for You.

What is MAGIS LGA?

Magis (pronounced MAH-jis), is the Latin word meaning “more”, “the better”, or “to a greater degree”, but it’s more than that. It is a multi-faceted concept that I learned as a student at Jesuit schools: Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. and Fordham University in the Bronx, New York. Most commonly associated with the Jesuit maxim, “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (AMDG)", which means “For the Greater Glory of God”, this concept pushes one to do “the greater good” or work toward “the greater glory” — rather than simply being “the greatest.”

It’s not about achieving the greatest thing immediately; it’s a process of striving for the greater good.

This company is committed to doing MORE than the usual legal or government affairs work.  MAGIS LGA aims to offer deeper insights, see around corners, and get GREATER results for our clients. That is why MAGIS LGA is “More than Legal. More than Government Affairs. More for You.”

Results.

  • At the Wireless Infrastructure Association (WIA), I led engagement with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), resulting in two major regulatory reforms (i.e. the “5G Upgrade Order” and the “Compound Expansion Order“), improving the ability of telecommunications companies to collocate antennae on existing infrastructure, and I served as counsel of record on subsequent litigation.

  • At WIA, I worked on a team that elevated an industry workforce issue in Congress and in the media, which resulted in the award of a $6 million grant.

  • At the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA), I served as counsel of record for Net Neutrality litigation, and I managed industry coalitions for esoteric telecoms issues like “Special Access” and the regulation of cable set-top boxes, for which I was one of the lead strategists among a handful of lobbyists.

What I’m About.

John Howes

Everywhere I’ve worked, I’ve achieved results.  Throughout my career, I have picked up seemingly intractable issues that others did not want to pursue, but I wanted to do more to get a greater result.  I understand the legal risks and the impact of public narratives, which is valuable for any company navigating complex regulations and the prospect of legislative action.  I understand how industry can actually move policy — not just how to write position papers.

I have worked at all levels of government — local, State, and Federal — and I have worked with multi-billion dollar corporations, as well as small companies still run by the families that started them a century ago.  With over a decade of experience in public policy, practicing law and as Counsel for the chairwoman of a House Appropriations Subcommittee, I have developed relationships and trust with staff on both sides of the aisle and in both Chambers, as well as in regulatory agencies.  I was born in D.C., and I can help you understand Washington, D.C. and get more.

I received my Juris Doctorate degree from American University’s Washington College of Law (WCL) and have been admitted to practice law in Maryland and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. and Ninth Circuits.  I received my bachelors degree in Political Science and Spanish from Fordham University.  In my spare time, I serve as President of Gonzaga College High School’s Alumni Association and as President of Washington, D.C.'s Lithuanian American Community.  I live in Vilnius, Lithuania with my amazing wife, Domantė, and our curious cat, Ryžius.  I’m a cyclist and also a big Man United and Nats fan.
